re-loading for 2009
After Mother Nature's unexpected slumber in 2007, The Mavericks Surf Contest® returned at full force this winter, and lived up to expectations--sunny skies and the giant, unpredictable waves that are synonymous with Mavericks. By sunset on Contest Day 2008 (January 12th), a new champion had been crowned amidst an unprecedented agreement amongst finalists to split the Contest earnings.
Now, as spring descends on the West Coast of California, we turn our attention back to the waiting game, and eagerly await the stormy Pacific Ocean's re-awakening for the 2008/2009 Contest Season. When those perfect Contest conditions--a menacing swell originating in the Gulf of Alaska that brings with it waves up to 50 feet tall--strike again, Contest Director, Jeff Clark will once again notify "The 24" that It's On. And when he does, the world's best will have a mere 24 hours to prepare themselves to face extreme conditions, the thunderous waves, and each other.
In the meantime, re-immerse yourself into the incredible sights and sounds from the 2008 season:
